Robert Large has been appointed Corporate Sponsorship Manager for Northwest Airlines. Ken Morton has been appointed Cathay Pacific company spokesman for Australia. Air Marshal Sir James Rowland and Ron Yates have joined the board of the Preston Group. Denis Cahill has been appointed Chief Pilot with AAA Airlines.

Bottom Line

• Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group has recorded a pre tax profit of $S634. 5m (SA4806) in the six months to September 30, this represents a decline of 7% on the same period last year. The profit fall was caused mainly by lower load factors, the strong Singapore dollar, and higher costs. United Airlines despite an 8. 8% increase in sales, reported a 76. 4% reduction in profit for the third quarter. Profit fell to $US25m ($32. 05m) from $US106. 1m ($136. 02m) for the same period last year. UAL president, Stephen Wolf cited fare cuts and the slow US economy as the main reasons for the poor performance. He stated that it was especially disappointing as the summer months were traditionally the best period for US airlines.
