McDonnell Douglas's T-45 Goshawk continues its carrier trials programme, preceding its introduction into service with the US Navy later this year. Although a responsibility of Douglas Aircraft, production of the Goshawk has been shifted to the St Louis plant, freeing up the Long Beach plant for airliner and C-17 production. (McDonnell Douglas)

Raf Training Cuts:
Further to the hefty cuts already announced for the RAF, the British service is to rationalise its fast jet training system to reduce costs.
The currently separate advanced flying training and weapons/tactics courses will be combined (still using Hawks), reducing students’ flying hours on these courses from 135 to 100. Wings will be awarded on completion of the new combined course. The system will result in 20 fewer aircraft and 28 fewer instructors being needed for the same number of students. Simulators will soon complement the Hawks, although it has been acknowledged that the students will have a slightly lower standard of airmanship and less opportunity to lead tactical formations under the new system.
