• A ceremony was held at the RANAS at Nowra on July 2 to mark the disbanding of the Fleet Air Arm’s frontline Squadrons, VF 805 equipped with Douglas A-4G Skyhawks and VS 816 equipped with Grumman S-2G Trackers. Both squadrons had comprised the Carrier Air Group aboard HMAS Melbourne. Until the future of fixed wing aircraft with the RAN has been decided, some of the Skyhawks and Trackers will be amalgamated with the second-line training squadrons at Nowra.
The UK Defence Secretary John Nott announced on July 1 that orders have been placed for 14 Sea Harriers, half of which are required to replace aircraft lost during the Falklands operation. Other additional orders are for nine Sea Kings, three Lynx, up to five Gazelles and three Chinooks (to replace the three lost on the Atlantic Conveyor).
