Qantas Formally Acquires Australian:

September 14 marked Qantas’ $400 million purchase of Australian Airlines, creating the region’s second largest carrier with a fleet of more than 120 aircraft ranging from Cessna Titans to Boeing 7478.

The amalgamation of the two airlines will however see more than 600 jobs lost over the coming year as operations are rationalised. Much of the job losses will come from white collar areas as duplications are eliminated, although jobs in the areas of flight operations, maintenance and engineering will also be lost.
