Warbirds #398 | RAAF Richmond marks 100 years
Old and new on show for RAAF Richmond 100
As Base Richmond rings in 100 years in operation, the RAAF has announced the base will hold a special air show in September.
RAAF Richmond is the oldest RAAF base in NSW and the second oldest in the country. While it had been home to a military flight school since as early as 1916, the site was formally established as a RAAF Base on 30 June 1925, where No. 3 Squadron flew its Airco DH9A light bombers and Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 biplane fighter craft. The base was noted as a crucial hub for wireless and telegraph transmissions training during WWII and has spent over half its operational life as the home to Australia’s C-130 Hercules airlift and cargo transport fleet.
