On the Airbands

A brand new year, with renewed zeal and enthusiasm for what we do – aeronautical radio monitoring! Many many letters arrived at the On the Airbands office during the festive season, providing a wealth of material to use.

One letter was from Peter Smith of Rushcutters Bay NSW, telling us how he likes to sit near the threshold of RW 07 at Sydney airport. One recent Saturday, Peter was observing VH-TJL, an Australian Airlines 737, which he heard on his scanner radio calling Sydney Tower, advising “ready for takeoff.

A SouthernPacific Nord was on final for a landing on RW 07.
