Boeing 727 Withdrawn From Australian Airlines Fleet

Australian Airlines operated its last scheduled passenger service with the Boeing 727 on 31/12. Flight TN403, which was flown by 727-276 VH-TBR, departed Sydney on schedule at 1700 with 129 passengers on board. On arrival in Melbourne VH-TBR was placed in storage with 6 other Australian 727-276s VH-TBG,-TBM, -TBN, -TBO, -TBP and-TBQ thus ending an era in the history of TAA/Australia Airlines, which goes back over 28 years to 1964.

Trans Australia Airlines first Boeing 727-76 VH-TJA flew into Melbourne/Essendon on 16/10/64 on the termination of its delivery flight from Seattle. On 02/11/64 VH-TJA operated its first scheduled passenger flight for TAA from Melbourne to Sydney. In total 6 Boeing 727-76s, VH-TJA thru VH-TJF, were ordered and operated by TAA between 11/64 and 02/80 and it is interesting to note that all six are still gainfully employed with overseas operators. Another two Dash 100s, VH-LAP and C2-RN7/VH-TBS, were operated on lease from Bloodstock Air Services and Air Nauru respectively by TN Cargo.
