The US Air Force has officially named the McDonnell Douglas C-17 airlifter, the Globemaster III. The preceding two Globemasters were also Douglas products, the first, the C-74of 1945 was powered by four 3250hp Wasp Major engines, while the second was the double deck C-124. Interestingly, Air Mobility Command has stated that had the C-17 been in service during the Gulf War, the initial movement of US troops would have been completed ten days earlier. (MDC)

Macchi Wing Repair Abandoned:
Plans to repair the existing wings on grounded RAAF Macchi MB-326H jet trainers have been abandoned following the discovery that the repairs will not result in a 100% safe wing. It was also discovered that some of the cracks could be accessed only by destroying the wing.
However, this does not mean the end of the Macchierring programme as 19new wing sets have been ordered with delivery of the first examples imminent whilst additional orders will the Macchi fleet up to 27 aircraft.
