Jane Corbett-Jones has taken over the PR responsibilities of ATI for NSW, replacing Tony Hill who is now manager of PR for TNT International. Sandra MacPhee is Ansett’s first Director of Sales, while Graham Hunter has been promoted to Director of Airport Services. The FAC has appointed former Qantas sales manager William Bryant as its Manager, Customer Relations. The retirement of Lord King as British Airways’ Chairman sees Sir Colin Marshall take up that position. Malcolm Baird has been appointed to the position of General Manager of the Australian Aviation Underwriting Pool, replacing Cedric Jones, who will undertake consultancy work. Also at AAUP, Geoff Butler has been promoted to National Underwriting Manager.

Bottom Line

Compass has announced a before tax loss of $10. 963 million for the half year ending December 31. This result is below budget, attributed to lower aircraft utilisation and lowerthanforecast yields. Ansett Trans- port Industries has returned to profitability with a first half profit for this financial year of $37. 4m, a turnaround on the group’s operating loss of $144. 5m in the previous year. Ansett’s parent companies TNT and News Corp meanwhile have also posted bottom line figures. News Corporation is on track to record a full year net profit of $1 billion following their half year profit of $453m, while TNT recorded a first half loss of $74. 4m. British Airways has posted a drop in profits for the third quarter to £20m ($A44m), a drop of $60m. Much of the fall in profits is attributed to the devaluation of the pound, while profit for the year is expected to be in the region of $210-230m ($A470- 515m). Qantas has recorded an undisclosed operating profit for the six months to De- cember 31. The result includes one full quar- ter of operations combined with Australian Airlines. America West has posted a fourth quarternetloss of $US17. 6m ($A25m), down from $US56m ($A81m) for the previous quarter. Southwest meanwhile has reported an increase in yearly net profit to $103. 6m ($A150m) up from only $26. 9m ($A39m) for the previous year.
