According to Mackay Airport CEO Richard Barker, the upgrades aim to improve the average passenger experience, keep Mackay a modern and accessible travel destination, and fortify the regional airport’s existing infrastructure and services for future travellers.
“Our region is growing, and with the 2032 Brisbane Olympics on the horizon, there has never been a better time for a major investment in our facilities, for the benefit of both locals and visitors,” he said.
Over 200 jobs have been created throughout the construction phase as enhancements are made in existing terminals, runways and carparks, and the Milton Precinct, a commercial and retail space, is opened.
“Our terminal will be a vibrant new space, with more room for passengers, a remodelled observation deck, upgraded bathrooms and modern furnishings. A further 190 public car parks will be available ahead of this year’s Christmas school holidays,” said Barker.
“The first stage of Milton Precinct is now complete, and we look forward to making more exciting announcements soon, as we welcome new tenants and services.”
Part of the funding for these major upgrades are being supported by a loan from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF).
“We are grateful for this support from NAIF, which recognises Mackay Airport as a vital contributor to our region and community,” said Barker.
Senator Nita Green, Assistant Minister for Northern Australia, said she has “had the opportunity to see these upgrades firsthand and they are impressive”.
“They will transform the airport and provide the type of economic development desperately needed in Mackay,” she said.
Rather than building an entirely new facility, Mackay Airport says construction within the existing framework of the airport will be providing a “cost-effective solution and minimising disruption for customers and stakeholders”.
This recent funding follows an initial investment of $155 million worth of upgrades to Cairns and Mackay from NAIF in June last year to contribute to community development in the regional cities.
