Airtest- Commander 114B
The Born Again Commander 114B
Booming along in the commodious cabin of a new Commander 114B would instill a sense of wellbeing in even the most jaded touring pilot.
This big black beauty may not be the quickest 260 horsepower retractable on the block, but boy what a comfortable delight it is to fly. Substantial, spacious, sleek, sophisticated and stable, yet remarkably responsive, the Commander makes up in flying pleasure and sheer style what it tends to lackin cold performance figures.
The 1970 Rockwell Commander 112 was one of relatively few light aircraft designed from scratch in the last two decades, and one of only a pair of original models from the Rockwell Co (the other being the 700/710 twin jointly developed with Fuji and also known as the FA-300, which only sold in small numbers). Before then it seems the conglomerate bought all the existing firms it could lay its hands on, to appropriate and market their products, including Aero Commander, Meyers, Volaircraft, Snow, Callair and North American.
