Sydney Airport has launched an iPhone app and a Facebook page as it rolls out a major public relations effort in support of its proposed terminal overhaul.

The iPhone app will allow users to check flight schedules and access real-time arrival and departure updates. Users can also subscribe to a particular flight and have updates about that flight automatically “pushed” to their phones.

The Facebook page, meanwhile, will allow users to “keep up to date with what’s happening, current news and offers,” the airport said in a statement. In a bid to boost interest, the airport is running a contest in which users who “like” the Facebook page can say in 25 words or less why they deserve a tropical getaway. The winner will receive two tickets to Honolulu.

The contest carries echoes of Qantas’s ill fated pajama contest on Twitter, which led to an avalanche of sarcastic and derisive comments aimed at the Flying Kangaroo. Unlike the Twitter contest, however, the airport’s Facebook page does not publicly display the entries.

Instead, the first post on the page is a series of promotional photos of the proposed new terminal layout.
