International Architecture firm Wood Bagot has been commissioned to complete the redesign of Perth Airport’s domestic and international terminals as the airport expands to meet a passenger boom.

The first phase of the expansion, construction of a $200 million new domestic terminal aimed primarily at spiking regional travel, is already underway and scheduled for completion by next year. The second phase, scheduled to get underway in April and reach completion by 2014, includes a $500 million redesign of the existing international terminal, which will expand to include some domestic flights.

Perth Airport has seen strong growth in recent years driven by demand from the mining and natural resource sectors. Passenger numbers are predicted to increase to 20.2 million by 2031, up from nearly 12 million last year.

Woods Bagot has worked on a number of high-profile projects in Australia in recent years, including Adelaide’s convention centre and city central precinct and Sydney University’s Abercrombie Precinct.

“Airports are an essential piece of infrastructure that not only act as gateways to major cities, but also form part of the commercial precinct and urban fabric of our metropolis,” Woods Bagot principal Grant Boshard said in a statement.
