Tiger Airways has announced plans to hire 100 new staff as it ramps up flights to pre-grounding levels.
The budget carrier is due to launch service on its Sydney-Brisbane route from August 1 and will increase daily flights across its network from 44 to 64 by October. That comes after the carrier last month opened its second base of operations at Sydney Airport alongside its main hub in Melbourne.

Tiger said 70 of the 100 new jobs will be based in Melbourne while the other 30 will be based in Sydney. The hires will include pilots, cabin crew, engineering staff and managers. Tiger said it would also base a second aircraft in Sydney as it launches the Brisbane route. The carrier operates a fleet of 10 A320s and is bringing in an 11th to serve as an operational spare.
The airline this week released financial results that showed it trimming its losses but still well in the red as it grapples with intensifying competition from Australia’s other carriers. Tiger has operated under a CASA-imposed daily flight cap since it was allowed to resume operations following a six-week grounding over safety concerns last year. The cap has gradually been eased over time and Tiger has applied to have it dropped altogether.
