Air New Zealand is heightening anticipation for its soon-to-emerge 777-300ER sporting a graphic promoting the new Hobbit trilogy of movies.

In a statement issued today, the airline said: “Tight security and total secrecy surround an Air New Zealand Boeing 777-300ER aircraft sequestered in a closed hangar at Air New Zealand’s Auckland technical operations base this week as it is transformed into a flying billboard for the soon to be released film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”

The graphic is being applied to the entire 73-metre length of the 777, which will take six days and nearly 400 hours to apply.

“At 830 square metres it’s the largest ever graphic to be applied to an aircraft,” Air New Zealand’s general manager marketing and communication, Mike Tod, said.

The aircraft will be unveiled on November 24 before operating a return flight to Los Angeles before acting as a prop to the premiere of the movie on November 28.
