Competition on services between Malaysia and Australia continues to intensify with Malaysia Airlines announcing it will increase its frequency to Sydney to triple daily from February 5. Last week Air Asia X said it will increase capacity to twice daily later this year.

Malaysian’s third daily service between Sydney and Kuala Lumpur using A330-300s will add 207,000 seats a year to the route, delivering an estimated $124 million in inbound visitor expenditure to the economy each year.

The adjustments in capacity will be incremental. From November 21 Malaysia Airlines will increase its current double-daily schedule from Sydney with an additional four services a week to 18 flights. That will increase to 21 a week from February.

“The triple daily flights from 5 February will support the growing demand we are seeing from the market in New South Wales and is also a way of sustaining the momentum given the airline’s recent positive performance,” Malaysia Airlines’ regional vice president Lee Poh Kait said.

oneworld alliance member Malaysia Airlines offers connections to more than 60 destinations through its KL hub, including on its A380 fleet to London, Paris and Hong Kong.
