Information technology company Unisys has extended its advanced baggage reconciliation contract with the bulk of Australia’s international airlines for a further four years.

The contract, which covers seven Australian international airports – Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney – is for the system that links passengers with their bags and tracks both as they move through the airport and helps airlines comply with Australia’s security regulations.

“Security, safety and a positive passenger experience are key issues for airlines,” Board of Airline Representatives of Australia (BARA) executive director Barry Abrams said in a statement.

“The Unisys baggage reconciliation system helps our member airlines not only comply with mandated security requirements for baggage handling, but also provides efficient processing when baggage needs to be found or removed to help prevent delays.”

The participating airlines secured and validated about 15.8 million bags on flights departing Australia each year and Unisys president and general manager of worldwide transportation Olivier Houri said the company was “delighted to continue our relationship with BARA”.

Unisys said it had worked with BARA, an industry group representing most of Australia’s international airlines, since 2004.
