This story from the July 2019 edition of Australian Aviation look at the development of the Airbus A300 more than half a century ago.
Airbus’s A300 may not look like anything out of the ordinary today, after 50 years during which some 7,000 widebody twin-jets have been produced by Boeing and Airbus, but in 1969 it started a quiet revolution that would drive the creation of a company that would change aviation forever.

says:Had my first AIRBUS flight in an AIR FRANCE A300 CDG/LHR in July 1979, and since then have been fortunate to fly on the whole range, A300/A310/A318/319/320/321/330/340/350 and 380. Was fortunate to be on the ANSETT A320 first day of service, jump seat as well….great days indeed.
Yes, a great article indeed, well done, 10/10.

says:I don’t think it’s entirely accurate to say the European jets of the 60s couldn’t compete with the Americans due to size for the short haul jets. The Caravelle came out a full 5 years before the Dc9 and it was the same size as the first Dc9. The 1-11 came out about the same time as the Dc9 and was close in size but US protectionism and BAC being too slow to introduce stretched versions hampered sales.
The Trident was bigger than the DC9 but had specification/performance issues (though not as bad as the Mercure!).
Commonality with the DC8/707 long haul fleets, reputation from the success of the DC8/707 along with the generally superior performance of the 727/DC9 were among other reasons for the USA domination of the short hauls.
