The Victorian institution signed a memorandum of understanding with the aviation giant on Wednesday to work together on a host of projects including robotics, materials, motion simulators, AI and batteries.
Professor Saeid Nahavandi, Deakin’s pro-vice-chancellor for defence technologies, said, “In the area of human performance we can help model human factors such as emotional responses and behaviours as the aviation industry continues to push frontiers in terms of flight times.”
In 2018, the university, which educates 60,000 students, opened its Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute, which aims to conduct experiments for industries such as defence, health care, security, social media and advanced manufacturing.
Deakin’s deputy vice-chancellor for research, Professor Julie Owens, said, “This engagement with Airbus is another milestone for Deakin in delivering on its promise to deliver real-world impact by strengthening its industry partnerships.
“Many Deakin researchers are very industry-focused, providing high-quality translational research and innovation outcomes, some of which have been rapidly transitioned into commercial products, as evidenced by the growing number of Deakin start-ups over recent years.”
The bulk of the research will likely take place in ManuFutures, the university’s manufacturing innovation hub on its Geelong Waurn Ponds campus.
Deakin claims the centre offers a “unique opportunity for creative and inspirational manufacturing enterprises that are designing the future”.
