Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that all non-residents and citizens will be banned from entering Australia on Friday.

The Prime Minister said the move was taken because 80 per cent of coronavirus cases were as a result of someone who has contracted the virus from overseas or someone who has had direct contact with someone who’s been overseas.

Prime Minister Morrison also pledged to help Australians stranded abroad to return home, telling the media on Thursday, “Those in remote parts of the world, that can prove challenging, but for those in other places, it is our intention to ensure we can maintain flights to enable them to come home as soon as possible.”

The announcement came hours after Tasmania effectively shut its borders to non-residents by introducing a two-week quarantine period for those arriving in the state.

On Wednesday, the Prime Minister lifted the country’s travel ban to a level 4, advising Australians not to leave the country.

He said then, “That is the first time that has ever happened in Australia’s history.

“The travel advice to every Australian is ‘do not travel abroad’. Do not go overseas. That is very clear that instruction. For those who are thinking of going overseas in the school holidays, don’t. Don’t go overseas.”
