The Virgin Blue group recorded a static 72.4 per cent revenue load factor for May, as a moderate increase in load factors on international services offset a fall in domestic loads.

Overall, the group’s passenger numbers increased by 4.6 per cent for the month, which pushed revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) up by 18.3 per cent. This matched capacity growth of 18.4 per cent, resulting in load factor remaining unchanged compared to the same time last year.

Domestic passenger numbers for the month increased by 3.3 per cent, which pushed RPKs up by 2.7 per cent. This was overshadowed by a six per cent increase in capacity, resulting in load factor declining by 2.4 points to 75.3 per cent. International services saw a 13.3 per cent increase in passengers, with RPKs increasing by 59.5 per cent as capacity increased by 44.4 per cent, resulting in a 6.4 point increase in load factor to 67.8 per cent.
