The late August simultaneous announcement by both Ansett and Australian that they were launching frequent flyer programs came as pretty much a surprise for most of the aviation community. A surprise because of all the US airline ‘fads’ that have emerged since they deregulated in 1978, the infamous frequent flyer program was
